Growth velocity
Growth velocity calculator
Enter two recorded heights and the dates they were measured. The calculator reports the height change, the time between them, and the growth velocity per year.
How growth velocity is calculated
Growth velocity is the change in height divided by the time between the two dates, expressed per year. The time is the exact number of days from the first date to the second, divided by 365.2425, the mean length of a Gregorian year. A taller second height gives a positive pace. A shorter second height gives a negative one. Neither result is a grade.
Feet and inches are converted to centimeters with 2.54 centimeters per inch before the pace is calculated. The result is shown in centimeters.
What this result is not
- A statement that the pace is normal or abnormal
- A required growth rate
- A guaranteed adult height, or an exact future height
- A medical diagnosis or a treatment recommendation
A single height has a percentile, not a velocity. Read what a height percentile means, see the growth charts, and the explanation in what growth velocity shows. How often to measure height is about leaving enough time between readings for a change to stand out.
